Bronchoscopy

A bronchoscopy allows us to examine your airway and diagnose lung diseases. Your doctor uses a special type of endoscope called a bronchoscope during the procedure.

Bronchoscopy

Your doctor may recommend a bronchoscopy for a number of reasons. We use bronchoscopy to:

  • Examine breathing problems, bleeding or a chronic cough
  • Take a biopsy (tissue sample) from your lungs
  • Stage lung cancer to determine the most appropriate treatment plan

Bronchoscopy: What to Expect

You cannot eat or drink for six to 12 hours before the test. Other pre-procedure instructions:

  • Discuss any medications you take or allergies you have with your doctor.
  • Arrange for someone to take you home after your procedure.
  • The procedure is usually done on an outpatient basis.
