St. Anthony's Hospital Receives Heart Failure Accreditation

Awarded by Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., (March 27, 2013)-- St. Anthony’s Hospital is pleased to announce it has received full Heart Failure Accreditation from the Society of Cardiovascular Patient Care (SCPC), an international not-for-profit organization that focuses on transforming cardiovascular care. St. Anthony’s Hospital is the only hospital in Pinellas County awarded the accreditation.

Recognizing that heart failure is a leading cause of mortality in the United States and approximately five million patients in the U.S. have heart failure, St. Anthony’s Hospital’s new status in Heart Failure Accreditation demonstrates its commitment to effectively managing the increasing numbers of heart failure patients presented in emergency departments. By following risk stratification protocols, St. Anthony’s ensures appropriate placement of patients based on clinical presentation and initial response to treatment and reducing hospital re-admissions.

“This accreditation along with our chest pain center accreditation from SCPC further validates our commitment to the highest quality of cardiovascular care we provide patients,” said Bill Ulbricht, president of St. Anthony’s Hospital. “We are proud of the collaborative efforts of our emergency medical services, cardiology team and community education outreach for earning this recent accreditation.”

With this new accreditation, St. Anthony’s Hospital is the only hospital in Pinellas County to have both Heart Failure and Chest Pain Center accreditations from SCPC.

St. Anthony’s Hospital demonstrated its expertise and commitment to quality patient care by meeting or exceeding a wide set of stringent criteria and undergoing an onsite review by a team of SCPC’s accreditation review specialists. Key areas in which a facility with Heart Failure Accreditation must demonstrate expertise include the following:

  • Emergency Assessment of Patients with Symptoms of Acute Decompensated Heart Failure-Diagnosis
  • Risk Stratification of the Heart Failure Patient
  • Treatment for Patients Presenting to the Emergency Department in Heart Failure
  • Heart Failure Discharge Criteria from the Emergency Department, Observation Stay or Inpatient Stay
  • Heart Failure Patient Education in the Emergency Department, Observation and Inpatient Unit
  • Personnel, Competencies and Training
  • Process Improvement
  • Organizational Structure and Commitment
  • Heart Failure Community Outreach
