Volunteers Are Our Heros

A Hero

A hero comes to someone’s aid,
Because it’s the right thing to do.
In the emergency room…
A teenage girl fights for her life.
She’s an innocent victim of a crime.
A volunteer waits with her mother.
He knows…No mother should be alone…
Waiting for words of hope.

She gives him a kiss before he goes to surgery.
He’s groggy.
He’s fallen at home and broken his hip.
He’s been her best friend for 40 years.
There’s a volunteer at the desk in the waiting area.
She comes over and sits by her for a while…
Gets her a cup of coffee.
She tells her how they met.
Somehow just talking about him makes her feel better.

The volunteer knows listening is important.

A well dressed, self-assured woman walks through the doors of St. Anthony’s.
As she approaches her destination, she becomes hesitant and tense.
She’s here for her annual mammogram, a simple test to discover breast cancer in its earliest and most treatable stage.
To her, this is NOT a simple test.
Both her mother and sister have had breast cancer and she is afraid.
Who is there for her, while the technician is with another patient behind closed doors?
Who gives her a chance to talk about her fears while helping her find a magazine?
A volunteer.

Volunteers help employees too.
In countless ways…In the offices, answering phones,
Filing, running errands,
And helping someone choose a thoughtful gift.

You’re our heroes…Today, tomorrow, and always.

Thank you all our heroes…our volunteers.
