St. Anthony’s Triathlon Becomes Part of New Global Event Series

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (Oct. 7, 2010) – The St. Anthony’s Triathlon, one of the best-known Olympic-distance triathlons in the United States, has become part of a new global event series titled 5150 and launched by the World Triathlon Corporation (WTC).

“We are pleased to become part of the Ironman Triathlon tradition,” said William G. Ulbricht, president of St. Anthony’s Hospital which has produced St. Anthony’s Triathlon for 27 years. “By partnering with the new 5150 Triathlon Series, we believe that St. Anthony’s Triathlon will continue to grow as a premier triathlon event. As the WTC has added Philip LaHaye to its staff as the 5150 director of operations. Philip will continue to serve as race director for St. Anthony’s Triathlon and we expect that St. Anthony’s Triathlon will benefit from the same focused commitment to producing a world class event that Philip demonstrated when he worked for St. Anthony’s as our race director.”

All events within the 5150 Triathlon Series include a 1.5K swim, 40K bike and 10K run. St. Anthony’s Triathlon will continue to be held along the scenic St. Petersburg waterfront. Scheduled for May 1, 2011, the new St. Anthony’s 5150 event will continue to feature a three-day event weekend that includes a sports and fitness expo, the Meek & Mighty Triathlon and St. Anthony’s Triathlon. Online registration for 2011 St. Anthony’s Triathlon opens Dec. 1, 2010, 9 a.m., EST at SATriathlon.com. For more information, call (727) 953-9005 or visit SATriathlon.com.

The St. Anthony’s Triathlon traditionally marks the year’s first major race in the U.S. and typically attracts some of the world’s best athletes. St. Anthony’s Triathlon has been named “Race of the Year” by USA Triathlon and has also served as a qualifier for the Ironman World Championship. In 2010, it was once again the USA Triathlon Regional Championship. For the past two years, the race has been broadcast nationally on the Versus network.

The 5150 Series is expected to be the largest international distance triathlon series in the world and will be the first non-drafting international race series of its kind, offering a competitive platform for professional and age group athletes. More information is available at www.5150.com.
