St. Anthony’s Breast Center Honored With Top Recognition

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (December 27, 2010) - The Susan Sheppard McGillicuddy Breast Center at St. Anthony's Hospital is honored with accreditation from the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC).  "This highly regarded national accreditation confirms our dedication to providing women with the latest forms of evaluation, treatment, and follow-up care that strive to meet their medical, physical and emotional needs," said Claudia Bundschu, M.D., radiologist and medical director of the breast center. This accreditation comes just after receiving the Breast Center of Excellence designation from the American College of Radiology (ACR).

"The Susan Sheppard McGillicuddy Breast Center is now the only facility in St. Petersburg with both the ACR designation and the NAPBC accreditation," said Ron Colaguori, chief operating officer at St. Anthony's hospital.  "We are very proud of the collaboration of our physicians and team members to provide coordinated, multi-disciplinary care for women with breast cancer and other breast health concerns."

The breast center at St. Anthony's is a multidisciplinary breast care program providing a full spectrum of clinical and support services, from screening and diagnosis to treatment and counseling. The latest technology at the center is delivered by a talented team of specialized clinicians, a radiologist and a patient care navigator who work closely together to provide coordinated care - personalized to address the individual breast health needs and concerns of each patient.

Accreditation by the NAPBC is only given to those centers that have voluntarily committed to provide the highest level of quality breast care and that undergo a rigorous evaluation process and review of their performance.  The standards include proficiency in the areas of: center leadership, clinical management, research, community outreach, professional education, and quality improvement.

Receiving care at a NAPBC-accredited center ensures that a patient will have access to:

•·        Comprehensive care, including a full range of state-of-the-art services

•·        A multidisciplinary team approach to coordinate the best treatment options

•·        Information about ongoing clinical trials and new treatment options

•·        Quality breast care close to home
