Free Stroke Prevention Fair to be Hosted by St. Anthony's Hospital
ST. PETERSBURG, Fla., (May 17, 2012) – St. Anthony’s Hospital hosts a free stroke prevention fair in its main lobby Thursday, May 24. The program starts at 8 a.m. and is scheduled to end at noon.
Information about the warning signs of stroke, what the most common risk factors are and what preventative steps can be taken to avoid strokes will be available.
Those in attendance also will receive the following for free:
-- Blood pressure checks
-- Healthy life screenings
-- Stroke rehabilitation information
Stroke now ranks as the fourth leading cause of death in the U.S. Strokes are also a leading cause of adult disabilities. However, up to 80 percent of strokes can be prevented.
The following tests help to determine if a stroke has occurred and if 911 should be called so that immediate medical treatment may be provided:
-- Ask the person stricken to smile. Does one side of the face droop?
-- Ask the person to raise both arms. Does one arm drift downward?
-- Ask the person to repeat a simple phrase. Is their speech slurred or strange?
The program is open to the public. In addition, complimentary valet and self parking will be available in the parking garage. St. Anthony’s Hospital is located at 1200 Seventh Ave. N. in St. Petersburg.
